UN: 5 Bahrainis arbitrarily detained, draconian sentences of Saudi women

The United Nations Working Group on Arbitrary Detention (WGAD) published on its website their Opinion on five young Bahraini citizens sentenced in an unfair mass trial known as the Soleimani Cell Case. The Working Group found that the individuals were arbitrarily arrested in violation of international human rights law. These five individuals are part of a group of 18 defendants tried by the Bahraini High Criminal Court on 31 January 2021. The WGAD called on the Bahraini government to take immediate measures which include releasing the prisoners. The individuals involved in this case are Ali Naser Ahmed Naser, Ali Hasan Mansoor Yusuf Marzooq AlJamri, Ali Mohamed Hasan Ali Husain, Sayed Redha Baqer Mahdi Mohsen Fadhul, and Sayed Falah Hasan Naser Mohsen Fadhul. The WGAD found that all individuals involved suffered illegal human rights violations.

The family and friends of native political prisoner, Ahmed Alajaimi have been in a state of shock since they became aware of what had happened to him. He was forcibly disappeared after regime’s forces snatched from him his cell in the first week of August. After 25 days he was seen at the hospital. He had been subjected to most horrific torture. For more than a month he has not been allowed family visits.  Mohammad Abdul Amir Kadem Al Aali has been given two-month jail sentence for responding to social media attack on Shia Muslims and their Imams. The attacker has not been questioned or charged.

On 2nd September the prisoners at Jau prison asked the prison officials to transfer a political prisoner to hospital. Sayed Salman Sayed Mahdi is suffering mental health issues which has deteriorated in recent days.

The father of political prisoner, Sayed Mohammad Al Toblani has spoken with agony about his forcibly disappeared son. They have not heard from him for a month. A scheduled visit on Monday was cancelled. He that: “As citizens we do not deserve this humiliating and agonizing treatment by the regime”.

The Jaw Prison administration has informed the family of the prisoner of conscience, Hussein Ali Al-Sheikh, who was forcibly hidden one month ago. that the scheduled visit this week had been cancelled. The family had already arrived at the prison building when they were told. The family of political prisoner Mohammed Ali Eid is seriously concerned for his well-being after he had been transferred to Bloc 6 at the notorious Jau prison. Four weeks have now passed since he was placed in solitary confinement, denied his basic rights and banned from his daily hour outside his cell. The family repeatedly called the jail officials to ask about him without success.

A khalifi court has extended the detention of four innocent people for more month. Hassan Mohammad Muslim, Hussain Essa AbuRwais, Ahmed Abdulla Marhoon and Mohammad Habib Baddou have had their detention extended many times since they were arrested last year. The repeated extension of their detention is confirmation of their innocence. Any court of law will acquit them of the fabricated charges imposed by the khalifi enemy.

The health of the renowned human rights champion, Abdul Hadi Alkhawaja has deteriorated. Because of his steadfastness his medical care was reduced and his ailments worsened. He has been told to stop communicating with his exiled daughters, Zainab and Maryam. The regime’s pressure usually makes him more adamant on demanding freedom for himself and the people. His family is extremely worried about his health. Calls have been made to release him and the rest of the main figures of the Revolution especially Dr Abdul Jalil Al Singace.

The European Saudi Organisation for Human Rights has raised the alarm about the inevitability of beheading an innocent Saudi citizen. Haidar Al Tehaifa was detained on 5th September 2017 and condemned to death on false charges. His conviction has been upheld by the Appeal Court and he could be executed any time.

In the second half of August, Saudi women received their lion share of persecution. First came the sentencing of Salma Al Shehab to 34 years, then Noora Al Qahtani was given 45 years. Maha Al Huwaiti received 23 years jail sentence. Then came the vicious attack at the girls orphanage in Khamis Mshait, in the South West of Arabia, in South Western Arabia. Video clips clearly show the vicious attacks by plain-clothed regime’s security forces on the helpless women who ran into the street crying in pain. Noora Al Qahtani was convicted of using the internet and social media accounts to “spread lies through tweets”, among other alleged crimes, according to a newly obtained Saudi court document. She is a mother of five daughters, including one with a disability, is nearly 50 years old and has health issues, according to the court records. The Guardian said: “The court records reveal a draconian sentence against a seemingly ordinary woman who used social media to voice support for dissidents but was not personally engaged in political activity. It contradicts the public image the Saudi government and its supporters have sought to foster of women enjoying more personal freedom under the rule of the de facto Saudi leader, Mohammed bin Salman.”
